Election Results: 2017 Officers and Trustees

Posted By Paula Collis, Friday, October 7, 2016

San Jose, CA (October 7, 2016)  - The Santa Clara County Bar Association is pleased to announce the results of its election for 2017 officers and trustees. Those elected will serve with 2017 President, Kate Wilson.

KATE WILSON, as 2017 President, will focus her year on implementing the new strategic plan that has been carefully developed by the Board of Trustees over the last few years to ensure that the Association continues to thrive and serve its members and community for many years to come. She will also oversee the celebration of the SCCBA’s centennial anniversary by recognizing the SCCBA’s many accomplishments and providing opportunities for our vibrant membership to come together and share their experiences while building new relationships for the future.  Ms. Wilson intends to continue the Association’s longstanding commitment to the highest standards of professionalism in the practice of law in Santa Clara County and to expand that professionalism amongst new members and neighboring jurisdictions.

Ms. Wilson is currently the Director and Associate General Counsel of Commercial Litigation and Global Employment Law for Extreme Networks, Inc. in San Jose where her in-house practice focuses on commercial litigation, employment law, and general corporate matters.  Prior to joining Extreme, she ran her own solo law firm and, prior to that, she was a litigator and employment law associate at Berliner Cohen for approximately 7 years.

Ms. Wilson has been actively engaged with the SCCBA for much of the last decade, currently serving as the 2016 President-Elect since August 2016 when she was selected to serve a vacancy in that position.  For the eight months prior to her appointment, she served as the Association Treasurer and also served as Secretary in 2015.  Ms. Wilson began her activity with the SCCBA as chair of the Barristers’ Committee.  After also serving as chair of several other Association committees, in 2012 she was selected by her peers as the SCCBA Barrister of the Year. Ms. Wilson has served on the Association’s Executive Committee and Board of Trustees for six years, and has also served as a member of the Finance Committee.

Ms. Wilson is a 2006 graduate of the Santa Clara University School of Law.

KEVIN HAMMON will serve as President-Elect for 2017 and will automatically assume the office of President in 2018. Mr. Hammon is currently serving as the Association Secretary. He has served as a trustee since 2011 and on the Executive Committee for four years.  Mr. Hammon has been most active with the Association’s Law Related Education Committee, which he chaired in 2010.  The Law Related Education Committee’s primary responsibility is overseeing the annual High School Mock Trial Program.

Mr. Hammon has been uniquely qualified to support the Mock Trial Program as he was a participant in it when he was in high school in San Jose.  Mr. Hammon has been in the practice of law since 2007 and is currently a lawyer in the Santa Clara County Counsel’s Dependency Unit.  Prior to that, he was a litigation attorney with McManis Faulkner.  Mr. Hammon is a graduate of the UCLA School of Law.

GABRIEL GREGG will serve as the Association Treasurer for 2017.  Mr. Gregg is currently a trustee and has served on the Executive Committee for three years.  He was previously the chair of the Business Law & Litigation Section.  He also served a term on the SCCBA Fair Election Commission. Mr. Gregg is currently a litigation partner at Robinson & Wood, Inc. in San Jose. He previously practiced at other law firms, including Latham & Watkins in Los Angeles and San Francisco where he began his career after graduating from the UCLA School of Law and completing a federal judicial clerkship.

As our personal and professional lives become increasingly impacted, we are often left with little time to participate in community service and professional organizations. I do not take your involvement in the Santa Clara County Bar Association for granted. Thank you for participating in the SCCBA’s 2016 Election for Officers and Board of Trustee Members. Thank you for considering my candidacy for Secretary.

I have enjoyed serving as a Member of the Board of Trustees since 2011, Chair of the Lawyer Referral Service Committee since 2014, Member of the SCCBA’s Executive Committee between 2011 and 2012, and the Chair of the Law Related Education Committee in 2010. Through the years, I have had the pleasure of working with SCCBA C.E.O. Chris Burdick, SCCBA staff, and a variety of current and former SCCBA Officers and Trustees. Without exception, they have been kind, insightful, and professional. It is indeed a privilege to be in their company. If elected Secretary, I will take minutes for the SCCBA’s Board of Trustee, Executive Committee, and Finance Committee meetings. Beyond that, I will strive to be a valuable member of the SCCBA team- carefully considering proposals and providing appropriate input.

Since 2004, I have been involved in Santa Clara County’s annual High School Mock Trial Tournament. I have served as the Tournament Administrator for the past three years. The Tournament represents a partnership between the SCCBA, the Santa Clara County Office of Education, and the Santa Clara County Superior Court. Over 100 attorneys volunteer their time as scorers. The Bench provides courtrooms and judges. Over 400 students participate in the program, serving as attorneys, witnesses, bailiffs, and court clerks. The reviews from teachers, attorneys, students, and staff have been overwhelmingly positive. I believe this Tournament exemplifies the SCCBA’s commitment to collaboration, member service, and community impact.

Since 2008, I have been a lawyer in the Santa Clara County Counsel’s Child Dependency Unit. I worked in the County Counsel’s Litigation Unit between 2007 and 2008. Between 2004 and 2007, I was a litigation attorney at McManis Faulkner.

SCCBA Installs New Leadership for 2015

Posted By Paula Collis, Tuesday, January 27, 2015

San Jose, CA (January 27, 2014) - Last week, area legal leaders, judges, and practitioners gathered downtown to welcome the 2015 Santa Clara County Bar Association leaders,  and to recognize outstanding attorney members at its annual Installation Ceremony.

The installation of bar officers John L. Mlnarik (President), Matthew H. Poppe (President-Elect), Nicole Isger (Treasurer), and Kate Wilson (Secretary), was performed by Hon. Risë  J. Pichon, the Presiding Judge of the Superior Court, County of Santa Clara, State of California. Installation remarks were made by incoming President John L. Mlnarik and Hon. Franklin E. Bondonno, Superior Court, County of Santa Clara, State of California.  Also sworn in during the evening’s event were the 2015 Board of Trustees: Adam J. Davis, Joshua J. Borger, Jill E. Fox, Kevin M. Hammon, Sylvia Perez-MacDonald, Megan E. Ottoboni, Laurie M. Charrington, Christopher W. Dull, Mindy Morton, Dianne L. Sweeney, Nicole Adams-Hess, Kipp C. Davis, Kathryn S. Diemer, Troy Benson, and Eugene Flemate.

Recognized during the event were Dianne L. Sweeney, recipient of the President’s Award, and  the recipient of this year’s Salsman Award, Martin Snitow. The Salsman Award is presented annually at the SCCBA Installation Event, and is named for Justice Bryl R. Salsman who was a Santa Clara County appellate court judge and superior court judge from 1949-61, and who made a significant contribution to the SCCBA. The award is given each year to an SCCBA member who has contributed significantly to the Association over a period of time without receiving other recognition. This year’s recipient, Mr. Snitow, is representative of many SCCBA members who contribute to the Association, without expectation of acknowledgment,  but rather simply to contribute to the well-being of the local legal community.

The SCCBA’s Chief Executive Officer and General Counsel, Christine Burdick, was also presented with a 25 year service award for her contributions and service to the Association of 25 years.  The award was presented to Ms. Burdick by the Hon. James Towery, who was president of the SCCBA when Ms. Burdick was hired.  Judge Towery noted that the high level of professionalism of the Santa Clara County legal community was due in large measure to Ms. Burdick’s efforts and dedication to ethics and professionalism over the course of her tenure.
