Minor's Counsel Training: What They Do & How To Work With Them




Whether you are a new or experienced attorney, this seminar focuses on providing a clear understanding of the role of Minor's Counsel and what they do, how to work with Minor's Counsel, and best practices. Participate in Minor's Counsel training where you will have the opportunity to hear from and network with Family Court judges, Family Court Services, mental health professionals, and Minor's Counsel.

Panel 1: Jessica Huey and Audrey Gamble of Huey & Gamble will present the benefits of accepting Minor's Counsel appointments, including exposure to all elements of family court. Thao Do, MFT, also joins the panel to discuss stages and ages of development and how to build rapport with your client. He will also discuss the importance of boundaries in the scope of Minor's Counsel.

Panel 2: Hon. Lori Pegg, Constance Carpenter, and Stephen Penn will discuss the nuts and bolts of Minor's Counsel including appointment issues, the role and responsibility of Minor's Counsel, Statutes, Rules of Court, and basic tips for both Minor's Counsel and parents' attorneys.

Panel 3: Hon. Julie Emede, Alexis Moody of LACY, and Mary Feldman will discuss important crossover issues affecting counsel for both children and parents in the Dependency, Guardianship, and Family Law systems. 

Panel 4: Hon. Jose Franco, Lori Penn and Shalini Venktash of Family Court Services will provide the perspective of Family Court Services and the Bench on how to prepare for Emergency Screenings and Review Hearings. In addition, Family Court Services will provide pointers for counsel to share with both parent and minor clients in Mediation.
