Biographical Information
  Judge Winifred Younge Smith was appointed to the Alameda Superior Court in November 2000. Since her appointment, Judge Smith has had a variety of assignments including misdemeanors, felony arraignments, Supervising Judge of the Wiley Manual and Allen E. Broussard Courthouses, Civil Law and Motion, Civil Direct Calendar and Supervising Judge of Civil. She served as Presiding Judge in 2014 and 2015 and is currently in a complex litigation/asbestos assignment in Oakland.

Judge Smith participates in panels and continuing education with, among others, the State Bar Litigation Section, San Francisco Trial Lawyers’ Association, Nation al Business Institute and State Bar Employment Law Section. She is a member of the Charles Houston Bar Association, California Association of Black Lawyers, Alameda County Bar Association and Alameda County Women Lawyers. She currently serves on the Board of the Association of Business Trial Lawyers.

Judge Smith served on the Judicial Council’s Access and Fairness and Education committees before serving on the Judicial Council from 2008 to 2011. She is active on her court and has served on the Executive Committee for most of her tenure.

Judge Smith volunteered as a judge for the Berkeley High School peer court, participates in local moot court competitions and served on the McCullum Youth Court Board of Directors. She has also mentored several lawyers through the Alameda County Bar Association Mentor Judge program. She served on the Board of Directors of the Volunteer Legal Services Corporation of ACBA for over 5 years and continues to support the organization.

Outside of her role as a judge, Judge Smith has served on the Boards of ADVOKIDS, Women and Children’s Family Services and Florence Crittenton Services. She is on the Scholarship Committee of Downs Memorial Methodist Church and also gives back to the community through her membership in the Oakland Bay Area Chapter of Links, Inc.

Before taking the bench, Judge Smith was a Deputy Attorney General in the San Francisco Office of the State Attorney General for 26 years litigating complex state and federal cases related to health and welfare issues.

Judge Smith graduated from Stanford University and Boston University School of Law.
