In June 2017, significant changes were adopted in both how Trustees & Officers are selected and the size of the Board of Trustees. Most changes were implemented in June 2017.  The amended by-laws are found at Articles IV and IX of the SCCBA By-Laws.

Here is an overview of the Board of Trustees.

  • The Board of Trustees as of 2019 will be comprised of 17 trustees, reduced from the current 30 trustees of two years ago and the 21 trustees of 2018.
  • Membership on the Board consists of six “selected/elected” at-large trustees and four elected officers in addition to designated seats for representatives from the following six legal organizations: Asian Pacific Bar Association of Silicon Valley, Santa Clara County Black Lawyers, La Raza Lawyers of Santa Clara County, and the following SCCBA entities: Barristers’ Committee, Diversity Committee and Women Lawyers’ Section. The Immediate Past President is a member of the Board of Trustees as an Emeritus Trustee with no vote.
  • All “elected/selected” trustee positions are at large and any SCCBA member may apply for any open "elected/selected" trustee position no matter where his/her principal office is located in the county.  3 trustee positions are open each year.
PROCEDURE FOR BEING SELECTED AS AN OFFICER OR TRUSTEE

For those interested in serving as a Trustee or Officer for 2019, the following is the procedure for being selected/elected.

Members interested in serving as a trustee or officer will submit an appropriate application form specifically designated for that position.  If more than one applicant submits an application for an open position and each applicant meets the criteria for that position, an electronic ballot will be emailed to all "active" SCCBA members to “elect” a member for that open position.  If only one application that meets the criteria is submitted for an open position, that applicant will be automatically selected by the Board of Trustees to fill that position.  See SCCBA By-Laws Article IV, Section 6 and Article IX.

Three (3) at-large positions are open for Trustee for two year terms beginning January 1, 2019 and ending December 31, 2020.  Trustees may serve for two consecutive two year terms.

The following officer positions are open for a one year term in 2019:  President-Elect (automatically becomes 2020 President); Secretary and Treasurer.  The current 2018 President-Elect, Gabriel Gregg, will automatically become President in 2019.

Criteria for eligibility as a trustee is membership in good standing with the SCCBA with dues fully paid for all of 2018 by January 1, 2018. For further information look at SCCBA By-Laws Article IV, Section 8.

Criteria for eligibility for each officer position is found in the sidebar at the left and at SCCBA By-Laws Article IV, Section 8.
